Annual Report 2020

MATRADE Annual Report 2020 108 In 2020, as Malaysia geared to host the 32nd Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation conference, the world was hit by the COVID-19 outbreak. Following the imposition of international travel restrictions and physical distancing measures, MATRADE responded by converting all physical activities into online programmes in line with global digitalisation developments. This included the #MyAPEC2020 Exhibition which took place from 1 September - 31 December 2020. This virtual exhibition was developed by Fusionex, a strategic technology partner keen to support efforts as well as enhance the impact and effectiveness of the exhibition. It reflected a timely joint venture in accelerating the transformation process in the implementation of export promotions in the future. #MyAPEC2020 Exhibition featured exhibitors from Malaysia as well as international companies from 21 APEC economies. Participating companies encompassed eight target sectors namely technology, green technology and energy, healthcare, professional and business services, transport and logistics, lifestyle, food and beverages as well as agro based products and building materials. These sectors were in line with the theme of APEC 2020, “Optimising Human Potential towards a Resilient Future of Shared Prosperity: Pivot. Prioritise. Progress” with priorities on improving the trade and investment narrative, inclusive economic participation through the digital economy and technology as well as driving innovative sustainability. #MyAPEC2020 EXHIBITION This inaugural virtual exhibition featured an interactive e-business platform comprising four main components, namely virtual exhibitions, virtual B2B matching (eBizMatch), pitching sessions and webinars. All these components were implemented online and are proof that business and trade activities can be carried out in the new normal without physical contact. While adhering to preventive measures during the outbreak, the virtual exhibition presented a variety of benefits including achieving a wider outreach. The event provided access regardless of time differences and location and trade visitors did not have to incur travel and accommodation expenses to participate. Equipped with interactive e-business facilities, the exhibition served as a platform for companies to establish business relationships with potential partners from around the world, promote products and services while enhancing networking and collaboration. #MyAPEC2020 Exhibition was successful in promoting 274 exhibitors of products and services worldwide with more than 8,000 visitors from 90 countries. A total of 308 eBizMatch sessions were arranged throughout the exhibition which generated sales worth RM574.03 million. Among products gaining most sales were latex and nitrile gloves to the United Kingdom and USA due to high demand for disposable medical devices following the COVID-19 pandemic. Solar energy system development projects were also sought by Brunei Darussalam and Taiwan to meet requirements of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2030. Prelude Ceremony #MyAPEC2020 Exhibition attended by the Deputy Minister of MITI
