CAEXPO aims to further strengthen regional economic ties through the ASEAN-China Free Trade Agreement (ACFTA) as well as serve as an annual programme of the Chinese Government to realise the agreement. The year 2020 was Malaysia's 17th participation since 2004. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, CAEXPO 2020 was organised via a hybrid format with a physical exhibition held at Nanning International Convention & Exhibition Centre (NICEC) as well as a virtual exhibition simultaneously. This hybrid exhibition themed "Jointly Building the Belt and Road Initiatives (BRI), Invigorating Digital Economy," enabled Malaysian companies to participate both physically and virtually. Despite facing travel constraints caused by the pandemic, CAEXPO 2020 received participation from all 10 ASEAN countries as well as others involved in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) including Iran, Pakistan and France. MATRADE coordinated the participation of 58 Malaysian companies in CAEXPO 2020 where a total of 26 companies had representatives in China attending the event physically. Meanwhile, 32 companies including those under the purview of Department of Industrial Development and Research (DIDR) and the East Coast Economic Region Development Council (ECERDC) participated virtually. Among products and services promoted were food & beverages, healthcare and professional services. CAEXPO 2020 also received support from other Malaysian Government Agencies in China such as Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), Malaysian Tourism Promotion Board, Education Malaysia, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industries (MAFI) which also opened an information counter at the Malaysia pavilion. MATRADE also collaborated with China Construction Bank (CCB) and CAEXPO Secretariat in organising a virtual business matching session, “2nd China - Malaysia B2B Business Meeting Session" where a total of 100 business meetings were organised for Malaysian companies.
